She was the daughter of Lieutenant Commander Douglas Graeme Clark and Florence Ada Hazen. She was raised on a farm in Woodbridge, CT. She graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1960, where she was co-editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper. She also went on to graduate from Wellesley College with honors in 1964.
